Cats win league opener thanks to clutch play by Beddows
Cambridge Cats V Oaklands College Wolves
Score line 79-78
Cambridge opened the 14/15 season with a nail biting affair hosting the young and talented side from Oaklands College . Cats started the game just as they have in the last few weeks lack lustre and sluggish. If not the for the good play of big man Paulo Costa in the first quarter the game could of slipped away from cats early. The trading of buckets throughout the second quarter led to Oakland leading at half time 39-33. The second half was the Beddow’s and Richardson show for cats, the pull up game of Richardson was key through the third and fourth quarters. Beddow’s ability to get the basket was key in getting the Wolves into foul trouble. Good defensive play from Alex Sullivan in the clutch also proved to be game changing with 28 seconds left his defence resulted in Cambridge regaining the ball, a big rebound by Sullivan at the offensive end led to Beddow’s being fouled on a last second three point attempt. Converting the second of three free throws and cleverly missing the last one which was rebounded by cats secured victory for cats. Cats are still a work in progress still not completely clicking on all fronts but signs of improvements are defiantly there. Richardson top scored with 25 Beddow’s 20 and Costa had 15 Cats now have a double header weekend in east London playing Barking and Dagenham in their second league game of the season and 3rd division Barking Abby in the second round of the national shield.
